Olive-Net is an ambitious project based on state-of-the-art natural product chemistry and biology, in order to exploit raw materials coming from the olive tree for the development of novel active ingredients that could be used in the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and cosmetic industry.
The olive tree is a critical agricultural element with high economic importance for the EU, especially for the countries of the Mediterranean region. Olive tree products like olive fruit and olive oil are the base of the Mediterranean diet and highly correlated with a “healthy living” lifestyle. The olive health benefits were strengthened by the European Medicine Agency (EMA) in 2011 which establish olive leaf decoction and extract as potent diuretics. The same year the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) issued that there is a cause and effect relationship between the consumption of olive polyphenols and the protection of LDL cholesterol particles from oxidation. Also, by-products like the olive mill side wastes, can be proven as innovative and efficient sources of the aforementioned olive bioactivities. Advances in the field of biological assessment create the need for a more thorough investigation of such olive based raw materials for the discovery of alternative and feasible new sources of chemical entities.
Olive-Net will integrate contemporary extraction techniques and enrichment technologies, along with sophisticated analysis techniques and methodologies and advanced pharmacological evaluation for the study and further exploitation of products and by-products coming from olive tree. This holistic approach will result into the production of novel pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals and cosmeceuticals.
The implementation will proceed through a highly collaborative network between and academic and non-academic participants from European, Associated and Third countries providing high impact results, transfer of knowledge and training.
